Why is Greywater Recycling so Important?
Due to climate change and population growth, most regions of the world now face increasing periods of drought and lower ground water levels. In summer 2022, Europe suffered under the most severe drought in 500 years, while the American Southwest is forced to find new ways to leverage its remaining water sources like the Colorado River. Water scarcity impacts people and organizations in their daily lives. Business operations stagnate and people must adapt their lifestyles, so we need to transition towards a water smart society.
If 50% of the world population would recycle its water at home, we could save 66 billion gallons of potable water use and 105 thousand tons of CO2 every single day.
In the next 25 years, the world population will grow by two billion people and more than 60% of all people will live in urban areas. As a result, the global demand for clean water will grow by 55% – much more than the hydrological cycle can supply.
By 2050, countries all over the world will face major challenges regarding water infrastructure. They will not be able to offer a sufficient supply of clean and safe tap water, nor will they have enough resources to treat the increased amount of wastewater.
How do we move forward?
A growing trend in many countries is the amendment of building codes, making substantial water saving mandatory. Water reuse requires a slightly different in-house piping network, but when implemented by design, extra costs are negligible. Hydraloop advocates to build all new construction ‘Recycle Ready’ and future proof infrastructures, today. Solving the global water crisis not only requires ambitious goals, but above all concrete action. The solutions are already here. Now, is the time to implement them rapidly.
How is Greywater Recycling a solution to the problem?
Hydraloop not only empowers people and organizations to drastically reduce their water consumption, its environmental impact goes much further:
• Up to 45% savings on tap water consumption
• Up to 45% savings on wastewater emissions
• Significant energy savings in the building by using residual heat
• Carbon footprint reduction, since 45% less tap water is transported from and to wastewater
facilities, and 45% less energy is needed for wastewater treatment
Decentralized greywater recycling is the most efficient and affordable way to use less tap water. Hydraloop treats greywater from showers, baths, and washing machines as well as condensation water from tumble dryers, heat pumps and air conditioning units. This reusable water can then be used or toilet flushing, washing machines, garden irrigation, and/or topping up swimming pools.
This modular device is simple to install with a small footprint, similar to that of a refrigerator. It is equipped with online monitoring, fully automatic, and does not require any consumable replacement parts. Each Hydraloop device can save the average home a minimum of 10,000 gallons of potable water each year! All Hydraloop devices are third party validated under NSF 350 and have UL-979 electrical certification.
